Contemporary artist James Bates finds inspiration in the most unlikely of places: from junk shops to Disney films, scrap-heaps to sketch books, Bates' wide artistic scope is reflected in his multi-media art pieces, which range from illustration to animation, advertising to graphic design. Unsurprisingly, Bates' aesthetic is singular: his prints are bold and fearless, mindful of composition and colour in a striking way. 'Trust In Me' - taking its title from the hypnotic Jungle Book number - depicts a large, metallic gold snake, weaving across the surface of the print. Bates' eye for graphic design is exemplified in the piece, which is a patchwork quilt of shape and texture: circles, squares, stripes, arrows, and spirals make the composite elements of the reptile, as hypnotic in their busy formation as Ka's infamous tune. 'Trust In Me' is a truly striking work of art: a statement piece to hang in the home and lift any space.
